The Big Fluff Ombre

The Big Fluff Pullover ombre edition! I have been wearing this version nonstop but I’ve been slacking on getting “proper glam shots” of it, so it feels good to finally be writing this post with all the details on how I faded my Big Fluff Pullover. In this post I’m going to go over everything I did and then I will go over my tips for how you can knit your own! For this version I used some Birdie skeins I had in my stash, except for Airmail which was the missing piece to my fade. I picked up 2 skeins of Airmail when I was at The Lamb & Kid in May. Creating your own fade would be an awesome way to use up partials and I think a faded rainbow version would be incredible! So without further ado here is what I did.

For this version I went with a 4 color fade. I used Dimond Laine Birdie in colors Hyperchick (C1), Chalet Chic (C2), Frostbite Falls (C3), and Airmail (C4). I knit Size 3 with the optional decrease round at the Hem. This meant that I had 12 inches of positive ease. I also slightly cropped this version. My Body length is approximately 10″ from the underarm. So keep that in mind if you plan on following exactly what I did below. I had 1 skein of Hyperchick so I had to split the skein into 3 equal balls. I did end up using almost all of this skein. The other colors I had 2 skeins each so I pulled 1 strand from 1 ball and each end from the other ball so that I had the 3 strands needed. I think it easiest to go section by section on the pattern to tell you how I did my color changes. That way you can make notes on your pattern to easily follow along.

BACK

Cast on with Hyperchick and used Hyperchick for the entirety of SHAPE SHOULDERS. After shape shoulders increasing was completed I then started to fade for the stockinette stitch part.

I used:

2 Hyperchick + 1 Chalet Chic for 4 rows.
1 Hyperchick + 2 Chalet Chic for 4 rows.
Chalet Chic for 10 rows.

This took me to where ARMHOLE SHAPING starts. Where I did the following:

2 Chalet Chic + 1 frostbite falls 4 rows.

1 Chalet Chic + 2 frostbite falls 2 rows.

Break yarn.

FRONT LEFT SHOULDER and FRONT RIGHT SHOULDER, and Join Front all in Hyperchick and then knit 2 rows.
Then continue as follows for the stockinette stitch part:
2 Hyperchick + 1 Chalet Chic for 4 rows.
1 Hyperchick + 2 Chalet Chic for 4 rows.
Chalet Chic for 10 rows.
This took me to where ARMHOLE SHAPING starts for the Front. Where I did the following:
2 Chalet Chic + 1 frostbite falls 4 rows.
1 Chalet Chic + 2 frostbite falls 2 rows.
BODY
This is where you will be joining in the round using 1 Chalet Chic + 2 frostbite falls. Continue with 1 Chalet Chic + 2 frostbite falls and knit 1 round.
Frostbite Falls for 11 rounds.
2 Frostbite Falls + 1 Airmail 4 rounds.
1 Frostbite Falls + 2 Airmail 4 rounds.
Airmail 5 rounds.
For the HEM I continued using only Airmail, and BO in Airmail.
SLEEVES
Sleeve pick up was with Chalet Chic and then I continued with Chalet Chic for 10 rounds.
2 Chalet Chic + 1 frostbite falls 4 rounds.
1 Chalet Chic + 2 frostbite falls 4 rounds.
Frostbite Falls for 11 rounds.
2 Frostbite Falls + 1 Airmail 4 rounds.
1 Frostbite Falls + 2 Airmail 4 rounds.
Airmail 3 rounds.
Cuff is in Airmail.
Here are my tips for creating your own ombre The Big Fluff Pullover:
  • Determine how many colors you will be using to create your fade. This will determine how many sections you will have. Remember your first and last color will be the only colors that fade once. All other colors will fade twice. For a 4 color fade you will have 7 sections; C1, C1-C2, C2, C2-C3, C3, C3-4, C4.
  • If wanting to create evenish blocks of colors you will need to do a bit of math. Look at the schematic and see what the Total Body Length from center Back is for the size you plan to knit. Then times this number by whatever your gauge per inch is. (The pattern gauge is 3 stitches per inch.) Whatever this number is will tell you approximately how many rows/rounds you will be knitting and thus help you determine how many rows/rounds each of your sections will be. Keep in mind the Front doesn’t have as many rows/rounds worked because of the shaping the back of the sweater has.
  • I thought it looked best to do the entirety of the Back Shape Shoulders in one color, but that doesn’t mean you have too! Play around and see what you like best!

I hope these pattern notes and tips are helpful! Let me know if you have any specific questions that I didn’t answer above.

The Big Fluff Pullover pattern is available for purchase on Ravelry and Payhip.
